Alongside Ambleside, Near Sawrey and Hawkshead, Elterwater is one of the sites where we’re making a multi-million-pound investment to help reduce storm water spills at Windermere. We’ve prioritised the areas that will have the biggest impact on Windermere’s waterways.
At Elterwater we’re proposing to build a new detention tank which can hold between 2,500 m3 and 300m3. It’ll be 15m wide and 18m deep below ground. This new storage tank will reduce the number of times the storm overflows operate during periods of heavy rainfall. Storm overflows operate when sewers fill with rain during heavy rainfall events and are designed to prevent homes and businesses from flooding.
We’re also exploring sustainable drainage solutions in this area to help slow the flow of rainwater like rain gardens, permeable paving and swales.
Our teams are busy finalising our designs and we’ll be submitting our proposal to planning in the summer. Work will start on site in June 2025 with the project complete by summer 2027.

Whilst we have a big role to play in reducing overflow spill frequency, we all can play an active role in protecting rivers, lakes and seas.
