Why are there discharge points in the sea?

Where we have a long sea outfall pipe, the discharge point may be indicated at the end of the pipe. In some instances this will mean the icon falls in the sea, marking the end of the pipe. For example, our Anchorsholme pumping station near Blackpool releases storm water through a 3.7km outfall pipe.
