Inside this building is a screened storm tank which takes excess flows from the network in times of heavy rainfall. This helps support the pumping station next to the car park and stops flooding in the area.
After several upgrades, including a £40 million project in 2015, our pumping stations work more efficiently than ever before. If there’s lots of rainfall, we can now transfer around 400 litres per second to our treatment works, an increase from 70 litres per second before our investment. This protects Windermere’s water quality by reducing the number of times our storm overflow operates.

Whilst we have a big role to play in reducing overflow spill frequency, we all can play an active role in protecting rivers, lakes and seas.
