Hawkshead Wastewater Treatment Works

Hawkshead is one of our sites where we’re making a multi-million pound investment to help reduce storm water spills at Windermere, alongside Near Sawrey, Ambleside and Elterwater. We’ve prioritised the areas that will have the biggest impact on Windermere’s waterways.

So, how do we do it? We use biological, chemical, and physical processes to remove any contaminants from the wastewater.

At Hawkshead we’re proposing to build a new detention tank which can hold 400m3 of storm water. This new tank will help to reduce the number of times the storm overflow operates during periods of heavy rainfall. Storm overflows operate when sewers fill with rain during heavy rainfall events and they are designed to prevent homes and businesses from flooding.

Our teams are busy finalising the design and we’ll be submitting our proposal to planning in the summer. Work will start on site in June 2025 with the project complete by summer 2027.
