Accelerating action
Following successful trials earlier in 2024, we are accelerating investment and rolling out new solutions at sites across the North West this summer, to reduce spills from storm overflows.
These solutions will allow us to increase the treatment and storage capacity at these sites, limiting the chances of the works becoming overwhelmed during periods of heavy rainfall and reducing the number of times the storm overflows at these locations will operate.
Solutions will increase capacity, enabling the site to treat more of the incoming flows; increase storage, enabling excess flows to be temporarily stored until they can be passed through the treatment process; and redirect surface water, preventing inundation of the works.
These solutions are enabling us to reduce spills now and form part of our accelerated programme of works which will help to reduce storm overflow spills by 60% over the decade to 2030.
See below for the sites we’re investing in now.
