Near Sawrey Wastewater Treatment Works

Welcome to Near Sawrey Wastewater Treatment Works. This is where your used water (from flushed loos, emptied sinks, baths, showers and household appliances) ends up. It’s here where we clean this water before safely returning it to the environment.

So, how do we do it? We use biological, chemical, and physical processes to remove any contaminants from the wastewater.

Jake shares more:

Near Sawrey is one of our sites where we’re making multi-million pound investment to help reduce storm water spills at Windermere, alongside Ambleside, Hawkshead and Elterwater. We’ve prioritised the areas that will have the biggest impact on Windermere’s waterways.

At Near Sawrey we’re exploring how we can implement natural solutions to slow the flow of rainwater. Attenuation basins and bioretention areas are all examples of how we can slow the speed rainwater enters our system, allowing us to treat more of what we need to.

Our teams are busy finalising the design and we’ll be submitting our proposal to planning in the summer. Work will start on site in June 2025 with the project complete by summer 2027.
