Unregistered Connections
We are a dedicated team that investigate and stop unregistered connections and protect the integrity of our water network. The team is supported by field agents and a legal team to help put a stop to these crimes under the Water Act.
An unregistered connection is where people tap into a water main or private pipe, in order to obtain water without paying for it.
Apart from committing a crime, people who make unregistered connections to the water supply system also endanger the safety of the water mains through possible contamination and altering the water quality. This can be caused simply by making a break in the pipe without taking necessary precautions to prevent contamination.
Connecting to a water main without authorisation can also cause leakages in the network, which if left unattended could lead to flooding and wastage of water.
