Meet Mohammed, our control and automation engineering apprentice

Mohammed is in the fourth year of his apprenticeship and has recently been named as a finalist in the BAME Apprenticeship Awards. As a volunteer in his local community, he’s found the role at United Utilities has given him a good work/life balance.

“Before I started my apprenticeship at United Utilities, I completed a degree in Islamic theology. From a young age, I was nurtured to understand responsibility and undertake community roles, so I volunteer at my local mosque and work with a number of charities and schools where students from my mosque attend.

“Since starting at United Utilities, I have grown both personally and professionally. Within a relatively short time I had the opportunity to experience working in many departments and have many memorable experiences – including being part of the early careers board and using my experience to help new starters into their careers. I’m also proud to be part of the multi-cultural group at United Utilities.

“One of my favourite things about working here is the flexible working policy as it has made it easy to have a work/life balance and perform my religious obligations alongside my work.

“Since starting my role, I have completed a number of courses to help develop my skills. I gained a BTEC in engineering and I’m currently working towards an HNC in electrics and electronics at Trafford College.

“I’ve received so much support from my trainers and colleagues, it’s added to my focus and determination to excel in my role. Coming from a minority ethnic group, I’ve personally felt the benefits of being accepted whilst working for a major FTSE100 company. I’ve recently been named as a finalist in the BAME Apprenticeship Awards which I’m delighted about. I’m passionate about my role and volunteering to help others, so I’m honoured to be recognised for my achievements.

“There are a lot of opportunities on tap for me here, many of which I didn’t have before I started my apprenticeship. I know I will be able to achieve all of my career goals here.”
