Meet Sarah

How did you find your apprenticeship?

I found out about the apprenticeship through a recruitment website. The application process was quite lengthy but it was easy and straight forward.

What attracted you to the position?

I considered my skills which are being focused, driven, analytical and a good eye for detail, and when I saw the apprentice quantity surveyor position become available, I knew that this was the route I wanted to take. I gave it everything I had and was lucky enough to be successful.

How did you find the recruitment process?

I enjoyed the assessment centre and the group stages of my interview. I hadn’t done a group interview stage before so it was something a bit different. I actually enjoyed my interview too. I had prepared a lot for it so I went into it feeling confident.

If somebody was debating between starting an apprenticeship or going to university, what would your advice be?

As I have already completed a first degree at Salford University studying media, I can speak from both sides and if I had my time again I would definitely just go straight for an apprenticeship role. Although I enjoyed my time at university after I had completed the course I realised that the job opportunities available to me in my degree area were very limited. Now I have the debt of that first degree but not much to show for it.

What is your favourite thing about your current role?

Working for United Utilities as an apprentice has made me feel part of a team which has boosted my confidence. Learning new things and interacting with new people is something I really enjoy doing. Everyone at United Utilities has been very supportive and this has encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone, helping me grow as a person.
