Meet Tom, our field service engineer
Our apprentice, Tom, is in his first year of training to become a field service engineer. He shares his experience so far and why he chose United Utilities to do his apprenticeship.
“From a young age, I always knew I wanted to be an electrical engineer. However, I wasn’t sure which industry would be best for me to start my career. An apprenticeship always felt like the best option for me – it strikes a good balance between technical training and theory. I am very happy with my decision to embark on an electrical engineering apprenticeship – I know the skills that I have learnt are lifelong and transferable, setting me up well for the future.
“My apprenticeship is for four years, I am currently in my first year and the majority of my time is spent at United Utilities state-of-the-art Bolton Technical Training centre. I have worked closely with Dougie, technical training specialist, who has taught me the practical skills and knowledge in order to become an electrical engineer. Throughout my time I have been able to put my skills to the test at Glossop wastewater treatment works, which has helped build my confidence and progress.
“Day to day when completing practical tasks I have to provide evidence to work towards my apprenticeship. While learning my core skills as an electrical engineer, I have also gained experience in alternate key areas of the business which is fantastic for my development and understanding the wider business.
“I am currently studying a Level 3 B-Tech in Engineering at Bury College. In addition to this I will also have the opportunity to potentially apply for a Higher National Certificate in electric engineering.
“I chose United Utilities as it is a huge FTSE100 company. Also, the apprenticeship campaign has a fantastic reputation and the support provided to apprentices is excellent, this was another reason I was drawn to United Utilities. The training facilities (especially the Bolton Technical Training Centre) are phenomenal, I knew from this I would receive the best training possible.
“Due to the nature of work at United Utilities, I have fantastic job security. Alongside this, I am also aware of the fantastic progression opportunities offered and also their continued offering of professional development. The benefits within the organisation are never ending. As a young adult currently learning how to drive, United Utilities have supported me through this stage of my life. I have only been with the company for five months and I could not be happier. I have felt very welcomed by everyone and everyone I work with couldn’t do enough to support me. I really feel I can achieve my goals here.
“My future goals are to achieve a distinction* in my BTEC qualification and enrol onto the Higher National Certificate within electrical engineering. Once I have completed this, I want to move into the high voltage team as this is something that is a huge interest to me.
“The highlight of my apprenticeship so far has to be learning about the core electrical skills I will require for my role and having the opportunity to put my newly gained knowledge into a safe, practical environment.”
