Nether Peover Wastewater Treatment Works

Our improvement work at Nether Peover Wastewater Treatment Works

Once the used water from your sink or toilet goes down the drain, our job begins to help transport it along a huge network of sewer pipes to one of over 560 treatment works, before it’s clean enough to return to the natural environment.

We’re constantly looking for ways to improve our assets and make sure the quality of water that’s returned to rivers and the sea is as clean as possible. We’re carrying out some work to upgrade our treatment works in Nether Peover which includes building new treatment tanks that will help to improve the quality of treated wastewater that is returned to the local watercourse.

  • The existing treatment works is accessed from Hulme Lane. We're extending the site to accommodate new tanks, kiosks and supporting equipment. We are due commence work in January 2023.

During the improvement work we'll access the site via the current entrance and have created a temporary compound area to accommodate our project team, equipment and materials. Details and the location of the new structures and equipment can be seen in the site layout overview drawing.

Our plans also include tree and shrub landscaping around the new equipment site on completion of the proposed work as detailed in our landscaping plan overview drawing.

  • This type of work will require the use of machinery which will create noise and vibrations.  There will be additional traffic on the local road network as equipment and materials are delivered to the site.

An integral part of our planning included the development of a traffic management plan to ensure disruption to the local community and road network is minimised as much as possible.

Wash, flush...carry on as normal: Don't worry, you will still be able to use all your existing appliances or facilities that take away the used water from your home or business just as you normally would while the improvement work takes place.

  • This section will keep you up to date with the development of the project, which when complete will improve the water returned to the local water course. This means that rivers, streams and the sea are cleaner for generations to come.

    Update: March 2023

    • The new inlet, tanks and supporting equipment installation is complete and now working live as part of the treatment process.
    • The site team have also completed the installation and connection of the new kiosks, housing the controls for the new equipment.
    • Additional drainage has been added to site to help combat the flood risk in the area.
    • The mechanical and electrical phase is complete, meaning a reduced site presence.
    • We are now in the testing phase.
    • Site wide finishing works and reinstatement is now in progress.
    • Testing phase of the new equipment in play is due to begin.
    • The site team will commence the demobilizing of the temporary compound area, with removal of material storage, car park and welfare units.

    Update: June 2023

What have we completed so far?

    • The team on site have installed a new storage tank, which sit 6 meters below ground. The tank arrived on site in sections with a specialist team worked on linking all segments together.
    • Supporting equipment linking new structures to the existing equipment, have been installed.
    • We are currently conducting a series of tests on the new equipment before going live.

What will be in the next phase?

    • The team are due to start work on three pipelines connected to the Treatment Works. Two of them are sewers running into site and the third, known as the outlet pipe returns the treated water to the local watercourse. All are being modernised to robust, reinforced plastic pipes to improve efficiency.
    • Following the completion of a rigorous testing phase, we will put all new equipment into play whilst closely monitoring and conduct reports to ensure the site is working effectively.
    • New roadways and walkways around site will also be created to aid site operatives whilst at site.
    • New fencing will be installed along the edge of site to mark the new boundary.

Cold Weather

Due to the freezing weather conditions across the region a number of our customers are experiencing no water or reduced pressure, caused by frozen pipes in their home. There are a few things you can do to check if you have frozen pipes. If you are unable to complete these checks please reach out to your family, friends or neighbours to see if they can help:

  1. If there are no local issues check with your neighbours. If they have water, you may have a frozen pipe in your property.
  2. Here’s what to do. Turn off your stop tap by turning it clockwise, it’s usually found under your kitchen sink, but can be in your garage or cellar.
  3. Once you’ve turned your stop tap off, turn on your cold tap in the kitchen
  4. If you have no water, this could be due to a frozen pipe somewhere in your home. This may be the pipe which comes into your home near to where your stop tap is located.
  5. Carefully thaw the pipe using a warm towel, or if safe to do so a hairdryer in short bursts, ensuring you keep well away from water. If you can get water from a neighbour you could try a hot water bottle too. This could take a while, depending on how frozen and big your pipes are.
  6. Switch your stop tap back on to see if the water is running.
