Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the Pensioner AVC you must:

  • Have applied for a water meter and, after a survey of your property, we are unable to fit the meter
  • You must also:
    • live alone and be aged 66 or above to be eligible for the single pensioner household tariff; or
    • live with one other person and both be aged 66 or above to be eligible for the two pensioner occupiers tariff.
  • Meet the water usage criteria - as below
  • Occupy the premise as your only home

In addition to the above:

  • Your property does not have a swimming pool/pond holding over 10,000 litres
  • Your property does not have a surface area over 250m2 and does not have 6+ bedrooms
  • Your property does not have a bath holding more than 230 litres
  • Water supplied to your home is not used for watering a garden (other than by hand) by means of any apparatus or automatic sprinkler/watering device
  • Your property does not have an animal trough
  • Your property does not use water for business purposes
  • Your property does not have a water-purifying unit which uses reverse osmosis

Additional conditions

You must inform us immediately if you circumstances change and you no longer meet this criteria.

United Utilities’ decision in relation to a person’s eligibility for the scheme will be final. We also reserve the right to:

  • amend the eligibility criteria and to suspend or cancel the scheme at any time; and
  • close the scheme to new customers at any given time

If you’re experiencing flooding from a road or footpath and there is no evidence of sewage (toilet paper etc.) please report this to your local council, who are responsible for highways drainage flooding.
