Our Action Plan for Cumbria

From investing in the infrastructure Cumbria needs to boosting the health of the county’s rivers, we’re playing our part in building a stronger Cumbria. We’re out every day and night, 24/7, 365 days a year, rolling up our sleeves and getting stuck in to deliver our Action Plan for Cumbria.

Capturing rainwater to reduce pressure on Cumbria’s sewers

As the wettest county in the UK, managing rainwater is a big challenge in Cumbria. Our sewers combine rainfall with wastewater from houses and businesses - so heavy periods of rain make it more likely that storm overflows will operate.

So we’re working with communities, using innovative technology combined with traditional techniques, to slow the flow of rainwater into Cumbria’s sewer network – because less water going into the sewers reduces the risk of storm overflows from operating, improving water health for all.

For example, in Carlisle town centre, we’ve worked in partnership to install rain-gardens, tree pits, recreational seating, cycleway and cycle storage, all working to re-direct surface water run-off into the newly installed SuDS features.
